HbA1c Stands For:
H = Hemoglobin
b = Hemoglobin (the “Hb” abbreviation is standard in medicine)
A1c = Adult Hemoglobin A, subtype 1c
Full form: Hemoglobin A1c (also called Glycated Hemoglobin or Glycosylated Hemoglobin).
If you mean HbA1c (sometimes mistyped as “HB1AC”), it stands for Hemoglobin A1c or Glycated Hemoglobin.
It is a blood test that measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that has glucose attached to it, providing an estimate of your average blood sugar levels over the previous 2–3 months. It is widely used to diagnose and monitor prediabetes and diabetes.
HbA1c Ranges
| HbA1c (%) | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Below 5.7% | Normal |
| 5.7% – 6.4% | Prediabetes |
| 6.5% or higher | Diabetes (confirmed with repeat testing or other criteria) |
HbA1c Goals for People with Diabetes
- Below 7.0%: Target for many adults with diabetes.
- Below 6.5%: May be recommended for some younger or newly diagnosed patients.
- 7–8%: May be appropriate for older adults or those with other medical conditions, depending on a doctor's advice.
Why is it important?
- Reflects long-term blood sugar control.
- Does not require fasting.
- Helps estimate the risk of diabetes complications such as:
- Eye disease (retinopathy)
- Kidney disease
- Nerve damage
- Heart disease and stroke
If you have a recent HbA1c result, share the value (e.g., 6.2%, 7.8%, or 9.1%), and I can explain what it means and what steps you can take.
